This college is named after the name of this locality. Barbil means a big piece of cultivable land. This area is inhabited by people of different corners of the country and this is the only college providing higher education facilities to their wards. Necessarily the future of the products of this college is the outcome of the cultivation of education in this institution. Germination of different varieties of seeds coming from different corners of the country through the touch of education is the aim of this institution. Hence the name is justified.
Barbil College is one of the oldest , Non Government (full aided) college in Keonjhar district. The aim of establishing a college in a tribal, rural and hilly area situated in the border of the state was a herculean task. This area is developed due to mining and industries and inhabited by the peoples of all the States of India. To create an atmosphere of Higher Education in this area means a continuous fighting with all possible adversities. The management & the staff of this college have been doing this since its inception.
Keeping in view to spread Higher Education, the college was inaugurated by Late Dr. J.K. Sahu, Ex-Minister U.D. on 24.08.78. At first it was functioning in Municipal High School and then shifted to the old OMD Hospital building in July 1981. The foundation stone for the present building was laid on Oct. 1984 by Mr. B.K. Biswal & Mr. N. Pattnaik Ex-Ministers of the State.
Now it is a fullfledged degree college having honours teaching facilitie in Arts, Science & Commerce . The Principal & Staff are trying to open some job oriented self financed Courses from this year. Let us hope for the best.
